Hookah Charcoal Wholesale: Coconut Cubes vs Quick-Light

Premium hookah charcoal cubes – 100% natural coconut shell cubes neatly stacked on a heat management device over a glowing hookah bowl, with minimal ash and white smoke.

Charcoal decides more about a shisha session than most customers realise. Poor coals burn unevenly, crack, spark, smell of chemicals or leave so much ash that staff are constantly replacing them. For a lounge or retailer buying by the carton, the difference between two charcoal suppliers shows up in complaints and in how many coals each session uses. This guide covers the main types, how to judge quality, and how much to order.

Quick-light coals contain an ignition agent, commonly a nitrate, which is what makes them catch so fast. For lounge service, natural coconut charcoal is the standard. Retailers usually stock both, because casual buyers without a burner still want quick-light.

Shapes and sizes

Coconut charcoal is pressed into cubes, flats and fingers. Cubes are the most common, and 25mm and 26mm cubes are the sizes most lounges use on standard bowls. Smaller cubes suit smaller bowls or heat management devices; flats spread heat over a wider bowl. Standardise on one size across your equipment so staff know exactly how many coals each bowl needs.

How to judge quality

Supplier claims about ash percentage and burn time are hard to compare, because they depend on how the test was done. A practical test on a sample box tells you more:

  • Lighting. Coals should light evenly on a coil without sparking or cracking. Sparks and cracks usually point to moisture or poor pressing.
  • Smell. Fully lit natural coals should have little smell. A chemical or sour smell suggests binders or contamination.
  • Ash. Fine, pale ash that holds its shape is a good sign. Heavy ash that crumbles onto the bowl means more coal changes.
  • Burn time. Time a coal on a real bowl, not in open air.
  • Consistency. Check several boxes from different cartons. A good sample and a poor shipment is a common story.

Packing and storage

Natural cubes are typically sold in 1kg boxes; a 1kg box of 25mm cubes holds roughly 72 pieces. Boxes are packed into master cartons, commonly around 10kg or 20kg, for wholesale. Charcoal absorbs moisture, so store it off the floor in a dry area and keep boxes closed. Damp charcoal sparks and burns badly.

How much to order

Most bowls take three or four 25mm cubes, with coals replaced during longer sessions. Multiply weekly sessions by coals per session, divide by the pieces in a box, and add a buffer, since running out stops service. For example, 300 sessions a week at four coals each is 1,200 coals, or about 17 boxes of 25mm cubes at 72 per box.

Safety

Burning charcoal gives off carbon monoxide. Light coals only in a well-ventilated area, fit CO alarms where coals are lit and used, and never use a charcoal burner in a closed room. Our guide to stocking a hookah lounge covers ventilation and the other safety points.

Frequently asked questions

How long do coconut hookah coals take to light?

On an electric coil, typically around 8 to 10 minutes, turning once, until the whole coal glows evenly. Using coals before they are fully lit gives a harsh taste.

Why does my charcoal spark?

Usually moisture trapped in the coal, or poor pressing. Store charcoal somewhere dry and test samples from each new batch.

How many coals are in a 1kg box?

For 25mm cubes, roughly 72. Larger cubes mean fewer pieces per kilogram, so compare prices per piece as well as per box.
