Wholesale Whey Protein: Concentrate vs Isolate for Retailers and Gyms

Myprotein Impact Whey protein powder in a black and white pouch with a measuring scoop, pouring into a shaker bottle – premium UK whey protein concentrate with 21g protein per serving, low in fat and sugar, available in over 40 flavours for muscle growth and recovery.

Whey protein is one of the few supplement categories that sells steadily in gyms, pharmacies, supermarkets and online shops at the same time. For a wholesale buyer the decision splits in two: stock branded retail tubs that customers already recognise, or buy bulk whey ingredient to pack or blend under your own label. Both work. They need different checks.

Concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate

TypeProtein content (dry basis)What changesWhere it sells
Whey protein concentrate (WPC 80)About 80%Keeps some lactose and fat; usually the cheapest per kg of proteinMainstream retail and gym shakes
Whey protein isolate (WPI 90)90% or moreFurther filtered to remove most lactose and fatLower-carb and lactose-conscious customers; premium ranges
Hydrolysed whey (WPH)VariesProtein partly broken down by enzymes; more bitter and more expensiveSpecialist and premium products

Many branded products are blends. A tub may lead with isolate on the front and still contain mostly concentrate, so read the ingredient list and the protein per serving rather than the product name.

Branded tubs for resale

Known brands sell faster and need no marketing, but margins are thinner and brand owners watch their distribution closely. The main points to check:

  • Market version. The same brand can have different labels, flavours, serving sizes and permitted claims in the US, UK and EU. US tubs are labelled to US rules and may not be compliant in Europe.
  • Best-before dates. Ask for the date on the actual stock. Flavour and mixability decline before the powder is unsafe, and customers notice.
  • Tub size and flavour mix. Chocolate and vanilla usually sell most. Buy smaller quantities of niche flavours.
  • Authenticity. Counterfeit tubs of leading brands exist. Batch codes, seal quality and a supplier who can show where the stock came from all matter.

The whey protein range includes retail brands such as Myprotein Impact Whey, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard and Dymatize ISO100.

Bulk whey for private label

Buying bulk ingredient, usually in 20kg to 25kg bags, gives better margins and control over the product. It also makes you responsible for what goes on the label. Ask the supplier for:

  • A specification sheet and certificate of analysis for the batch, including protein, moisture, fat, lactose and ash.
  • Microbiological results.
  • An amino acid profile. “Amino spiking”, adding cheap free amino acids such as glycine to inflate a protein test result, is a known problem in the trade, and a full amino acid profile makes it visible.
  • Whether the whey is instantised (treated with lecithin to mix easily). Non-instant whey clumps in a shaker.
  • Allergen status: whey is milk, and soy lecithin is a common instantising agent.

Starting points for bulk ingredient in the range are whey protein concentrate WPC 80 and whey protein isolate.

Labels and claims

In the EU and UK, nutrition and health claims on food, including sports nutrition, are limited to authorised wording. For protein, authorised claims include that protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass, and a product has to meet the conditions of use to carry them. You can check the wording in the EU Register of nutrition and health claims. Claims copied from US packaging often do not meet these rules.

Retailers selling to competitive athletes also get asked about banned-substance testing. Third-party programmes such as Informed Sport test batches; if that matters to your customers, ask whether the product or ingredient is certified.

Storage

Keep whey cool and dry. Heat speeds up browning reactions between lactose and protein, which dulls flavour and colour, and humidity makes powder cake. Bulk bags should be resealed or used quickly once opened.

Frequently asked questions

Is whey isolate worth the extra cost for a gym shop?

Stock both. Concentrate carries the volume because of price. Isolate sells to customers who want less lactose, fat or carbohydrate, and usually carries a better margin per tub.

What is WPC 80?

Whey protein concentrate with roughly 80% protein on a dry basis. It is the most common bulk whey ingredient for shakes and private-label powders.

How do I check bulk whey is not amino-spiked?

Ask for a full amino acid profile from an independent laboratory. Unusually high glycine, taurine or other free amino acids compared with a normal whey profile is a warning sign.
