A Royal Legacy Since 1874
Louis XIII is not merely a cognac – it is the ultimate expression of the cellar master‘s art, a living legacy crafted from the rarest and most precious eaux‑de‑vie the House of Rémy Martin possesses. First created in 1874 by Paul‑Émile Rémy Martin, who had the vision to blend the oldest eaux‑de‑vie in the House and present them in an ornate decanter decorated with fleurs‑de‑lys.
The name honours King Louis XIII, the 17th‑century French monarch who was the first to recognise cognac as a distinct category of brandy in its own right. It also pays tribute to the era when the Rémy Martin family first established itself in the Cognac region.
The Blend: A Symphony of Time
Louis XIII is composed of up to 1,200 individual eaux‑de‑vie, all sourced exclusively from the Grande Champagne region – the premier cru of Cognac, renowned for its chalky limestone soils that produce the finest grapes for long‑aging spirits.
The youngest eau‑de‑vie in the blend is at least 40 to 50 years old, while the oldest has been aged for over a century. The ageing takes place inside 100‑ to 150‑year‑old tierçons – thin‑walled Limousin oak casks originally designed for maritime transport, which are no longer being produced.
The result is a deep mahogany spirit of extraordinary complexity: notes of myrrh, honey, dried rose, plum, honeysuckle, cigar box, leather, fig and passion fruit continue to evolve on the palate for more than an hour after drinking.
The Crystal Decanter – A Work of Art
The decanter is based on a 16th‑century metal flask discovered on the site of the Battle of Jarnac. Purchased by Paul‑Émile Rémy Martin in 1850, it was registered and reproduced as a glass flask in 1874. Today, each decanter is hand‑cut, hand‑blown, individually engraved and numbered by master artisans from the finest European crystal houses, including Baccarat, Saint‑Louis and Cristallerie de Sèvres.
The distinctive design features an 18‑carat minimum gold collar encasing the neck, 10 distinctive crystal spikes on each side, and a fleur‑de‑lys stopper. No two decanters are ever identical. The decanter is presented in a new signature red coffret made from 100% cellulosic, fully recyclable materials – reflecting the House‘s commitment to “Sustainable Exception”.

🔧 Storage & Serving Guide
Serving Ritual
| Element | Instruction |
|---|---|
| Temperature | Best served at 18–20°C (64–68°F). Do not chill – this would mute the complex aromas |
| Glassware | Tulip‑shaped crystal glasses (2 cl or 4 cl) – these concentrate the aromas for nosing |
| Aeration time | After pouring, allow the cognac to rest for 15–20 minutes before nosing |
| Pouring | The decanter is heavy – Louis XIII provides a crystal pipette (spear) to pour the cognac without risk |
| Food pairings | Dark chocolate (70%+), cigar (Cuban Davidoff, Montecristo, Partagás), aged Comté cheese, caviar, foie gras, black truffles |
| Solo enjoyment | Louis XIII is best enjoyed neat, without mixers or ice – the ultimate meditation spirit |
Storage Instructions
-
Unopened decanters can be stored indefinitely in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures
-
Keep the decanter upright – the natural cork should not be kept in prolonged contact with the high‑alcohol spirit
-
Once opened, reseal the stopper tightly and store in the original coffret. Consume within 12–24 months for optimal aromatic integrity (though the spirit will remain drinkable for years)
